What we do:
ORSIG represents Victorian Public Libraries and provides database evaluations, training, vendor liaison and marketing ideas through workshops and online forums.
Background:
ORSIG replaced the Gulliver Committee in April 2010 after the selection process of online databases for public libraries in Victoria changed. From 1 July 2010, all public libraries in Victoria (apart from Vision Australia and Murrindindi Shire) will subscribe to the genealogy resource Ancestry only. However, libraries can still choose to subscribe to other databases on an individual basis.
ORSIG will continue to liaise with database vendors but will also provide information about freely available online resources. Trials will be made available as well as evaluations, vendor contact details and sourcing of the most favorable price through ERA, BRUCE or other.
ORSIG aim is to:
  1. Organise an annual forum for the evaluation, training and marketing of online databases and online resources in Victorian public libraries.
    1. Includes how vendors market and promote databases and online resources.
  2. Provide and maintain an evaluation tool for Public Libraries when choosing both free and subscription databases and online resources. This resource will be in the form of an evaluation wiki [http://databaseevaluations.pbworks.com] which will also facilitate the exchange of opinions of, and experiences with, databases and online resources amongst members.
  3. Develop a marketing and training workshop to discuss and share what public libraries are doing to train their staff in the use of these databases and online resources promote online resource usage to the library users.
